How to Turn Down the Mental Chatter Part 1

February 5, 2013

Notice I say ‘Turn Down’ not ‘Switch Off’ because I am sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings – but contrary to popular teaching – Simple humans at our stage in development simply CANNOT turn off the thoughts completely – so stop fighting them.

Here is my suggestion to reduce the noise of your brain:

Whatever meditation practice you do – INCLUDE the mental chatter, make friends with it.  For example, if you are focussing on the breath and you notice thoughts distracting you – visualise those thoughts fusing with the breath – letting them go each time you breathe out.

Another trick is to simply label them. Say you are staring at a candle flame to focus your mind (a meditation technique great for beginners) and you just cannot stop thinking about how much you’ve got to do today – visualise a great big label over those thoughts: ‘THOUGHTS’ as you continue to stare into the candle.

The thoughts are still there – but so is your focus. The mental chatter continues to rabbit on – but you have succeeded in turning the volume DOWN. Well done!

Is it actually possible to STOP all thoughts completely absolutely and achieve spaciousness within the silence – YES I believe so. Have I ever achieved this? Yes; once, for approximately 00000000.1 of a second sitting on a rock in the Arabian Ocean.

The best millisecond I ever had.

Have a FABULOUS Day and Until Next Time,

Matt Chase International 🙂
