Writing for Writings’ Sake

November 6, 2013

I can’t do it. Whenever I get ‘Writers’ Block’ I just don’t bother to write anything at all. I have attempted the advice of many professional authors: Write for the sake of it – anything, read more, take notes when watching a film, try an alternative method/genre to your usual e.g.: poetry if you write nonfiction, the list goes on and includes getting up from the computer to take a walk or make a cup of tea. None of these work for me. The reason, perhaps – is because I don’t believe in writer’s block!

When I write – I write. I can easily write a full length book (55k words plus) in four to six weeks. I can write a short story in about an hour. I of course then go back and copy edit, edit, expand and delete small sections but the first draft is often produced very, very quickly. There is a ‘but’ of course – once I start it seems like I have been forced to write. Something wakes me in the night and from then on, until the book is finished, I can’t think about anything else. It is completely exhausting but I have no choice. I will spend ten hours or so writing in a day and then go to bed only to be kept awake by more and more ideas: ‘That line (that went through my mind) is perfect for the opening chapter…. Wow! That’s a great idea for section two!’ I then must must must get up and write it down on either a notepad or fire up the PC and tap away on the keyboard. I have experimented with leaving it until morning but I often forget the line or it somehow loses some of the magic, the words don’t quite gel as they did when they were fresh from my beautiful subconscious. I do not write my books – my subconscious does. When the subconscious needs a break – it takes one. This is what many writers call ‘Writers’ Block’. It’s very frustrating, whatever you choose to call it. It is also ironic in that my last post was about surrender….

Note to self: take your own advice.

And on that note, I bid you a happy ‘Writers’ Block’. 🙂
